Why Am I Always Tired?

Tired ManThat is a great question. Unfortunately, there is no one right answer. There are dozens of reasons why a person may be tired all the time.

Some have to do with lifestyle, others are medical and still others may be due to stress or emotional issues. Everyone has a unique lifestyle, quality of health, body type, and stress level.

Therefore, the reason why you are always tired is probably unique to you.

The purpose of this site is to give you some insight into the possible reasons why you are always feeling tired in order to help you better understand why you are constantly tired.

Once you have determined why you are always tired you can take steps to overcome this feeling.

LIFESTYLE

Sleep related issues are always the prime suspect when you are suffering from chronic or severe fatigue. However, lack of sleep may not be the reason you’re tired.

Plenty of people get adequate sleep but are not able to slow down or manage stress during the day. Others do not relax or do not really know how to relax.

Stop Waking Up During the Night

SleepSleep is very important. If you are asking yourself, “Why am I so tired?” it’s quite possible that you are not getting enough sleep. When you don’t get enough sleep your body does not have a chance to feel any other way but tired.

Not getting enough quality sleep builds up a sort of “sleep debt” that leaves you feeling chronically tired. Determining how much sleep you need, your sleep cycles, and the best ways to get to sleep are unique to you but regardless of your individual situation, there are simple things you can do to help yourself stay asleep and stop waking throughout the night.

One of the biggest reasons people wake up in the night is because they have to go to the bathroom. No matter how urgently you need to go, you still are breaking your sleep cycle in order to relieve yourself. For most people, the reason for waking up is having too much to drink too late in the evening.

Hydration is very important and will help you feel less tired, but no matter how hydrated you are, if you wake up during the night to go to the bathroom, drinking all that water is contributing to making you tired rather than preventing it! The key is to make sure that you drink as much as you can earlier in the day.

Try not to drink anything after 8pm. If that does not work, slowly move that deadline earlier and earlier in the day until you find a time that allows you to drink enough water but stay asleep all night.

Another tip for sleeping through the night is to keep your bedroom cool, but not cold. When you are hot, it causes you to sweat. This will make you uncomfortable and will cause you to wake up. If you keep your bedroom cooler, but not cold, it will help you stay comfortable all night long.

Furthermore, you should use natural cotton sheets versus synthetic fabrics. Cotton sheets will breathe more, allowing you to stay cooler.
Sounds also tend to wake you up during the night. Although you grow accustomed to certain noises, they still prevent you from achieving a quality sleep.

One of the best solutions to this problem is to sleep with ear plugs in. However, if that is too uncomfortable, try a sound machine which emits “white” noise. This noise sounds like a radio that is not tuned to a station. The sound has an amazing ability to mask other sounds. Having this steady noise will help you achieve a deeper, more restful sleep.

If you have trouble falling asleep in the first place, try to establish a relaxing routine just before bedtime. Listen to relaxing music, do some simple stretching exercise or spend a few minutes meditating. You can also try an herbal sleep aid such as valerian or chamomile to help you relax before bedtime.

Manage Stress during the Day

You may be thinking “I am always tired” when the really problem is “I am always under stress.” Stress can be caused by many things.

If you have a demanding job or work long hours or if the responsibilities of managing a home overwhelm you, the stress of these situations will cause you to feel very tired.

If you deal with difficult people every day, whether they are family members or co-workers, the emotional tool of these encounters will also be stressful and draining. Or the cause of your stress may be something temporary that is going on in your life, such as moving, starting a new job or dealing or the loss of a loved one. Even something good like planning a vacation can be stressful!

There are several effective ways to manage stress. First, if you pay attention to your general health and take care of your body, it will be easier to deal with stressful situations. You can also use specific exercises like yoga and meditation or deep breathing when you are going through something stressful.

In fact, remembering to breathe is one of the most effective ways to manage stress. It may seem simple, but the first thing many people do without even realizing it when they are under stress is to slow or even stop breathing. If you don’t take deep breaths, you deprive your body of energy-giving oxygen.

No matter how busy you think you are, take time – even five minutes – for yourself each day. Find a comfortable place where you can relax with a cup of herbal tea or do a short meditation exercise, and make this a regular routine.

Taking a mid-morning and mid-afternoon break can help you recharge so you can face the rest of your stressful day without feeling drained or overwhelmed.

Exercise

If you’ve ever done any kind of exercise, you know that it can make you feel great. Of course, if you overdo it, exercise can actually contribute to your fatigue. But if you are always feeling tired, you may not be getting enough exercise. Exercise is important because it helps your blood flow and circulates oxygen through your body, and as mentioned, it is oxygen that gives you energy.

Many people who are constantly tired do not have a regular exercise routine. If this is the case for you, you may be thinking, “I’m too tired to exercise.” Or perhaps you think you are too busy to fit exercise into your day. Think again. Everyone has time to exercise. Even 20 minutes of moderate exercise per day can help to increase your energy level. If you think about it honestly, you probably waste more time than that on a daily basis dong something like flipping through TV channels, surfing the internet or gossiping on the phone.

Simple but energizing exercises include brisk walking, a few minutes of yoga sun salutations or even something as simple (and fun) as dancing in your living room to your favorite music! If you don’t believe in the power of exercise to energize you, try it just once the next time you feel drained. Take a brisk walk around the block and see if you don’t feel better, even for a short time. Now think how much better you will feel all day every day if you make exercise a part of your daily routine.

HEALTH AND YOUR ENERGY LEVEL

It makes sense that a healthy person has more energy than a person who suffers from any kind of illness. In fact, tiredness is a primary symptom of many medical conditions. If you are tired all the time and you have a generally healthy lifestyle, you may have an underlying medical condition that is causing your fatigue.

Here are five medical problems that may be the hidden cause of your fatigue. In addition to these, almost any kind of infection or illness can deplete your energy levels.

Sluggish Thyroid

Hypothyroidism, or “sluggish thyroid,” is a common problem, especially in women. Many people with low thyroid function are not even aware that they have the condition. The thyroid gland is responsible for producing hormones that control your metabolism. The more efficient your metabolism is, the higher your energy level will be. The most common sign that your thyroid is not functioning properly is fatigue.

Anyone who suffers from chronic fatigue that cannot be explained should have a blood test to determine if hypothyroidism is the culprit. Your doctor will test levels of two hormones, known as “T3” and “T4” to see if they are low. If a sluggish thyroid turns out to be the problem, the condition can easily be treated with hormone supplements.

Food Allergies

Fatigue can also be caused by allergies to certain ingredients commonly found in foods. If you have a food allergy, your body treats the ingredient as an invader and makes antibodies to fight it off, and all that “fighting” can be exhausting!

Common food allergies that cause fatigue include gluten (the protein in wheat products), dairy and soy allergies. If you suspect that you have a food allergy, try an elimination diet. First, keep a log of everything you eat. When you feel especially tired, notice what you ate 30 minutes to an hour earlier. If a pattern develops, eliminate that food from your diet completely and see if your energy improves.

Anemia

Your blood carries oxygen throughout your body via hemoglobin, a protein in red blood cells that is rich in iron. If you have an iron deficiency, your blood will not be able to do its job and you will feel exhausted because of oxygen deprivation.

Many women suffer from iron deficiency anemia during the reproductive years. This is especially true for women who bleed heavily when they menstruate. But even if you are not a menstruating woman, you can develop anemia if your iron intake is inadequate. Anemia can also develop if you do not have enough folate or vitamin B12 in your diet.

Your doctor can do a blood test to see if you are anemic. If you are, you can usually correct the problem with iron or vitamin supplements. If supplements do not help, you may need to find out if you are losing blood for some reason.

Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea is a condition in which you actually stop breathing for a moment now and then throughout the night. When this happens, your body reacts by waking just enough to get you to breathing again. If you have sleep apnea, you are not getting adequate rest because your sleep is continually interrupted.

One sign that you may have sleep apnea is snoring. If your partner has complained that you snore, check with your doctor to see if sleep apnea is suspected, especially if you always feel tired despite thinking you are sleeping through the night. Sleep apnea is caused by an obstructed airway and is more common in people who are overweight.

Certain lifestyle changes, like losing weight or quitting smoking if you smoke can correct the problem of sleep apnea. There are also devices that can keep your airway open while you sleep. If you have sleep apnea, it is very important to treat it because left untreated, this condition may increase your risk of a heart attack or stroke.

Undiagnosed Heart Disease

Fatigue is a hallmark sign of heart disease. If you are easily tired after activities that you used to be able to do with ease, such as walking up a flight of stairs, your heart may not be working up to par and may need to be evaluated for heart disease.

If your heart is not pumping blood efficiently, your tissues and organs are not getting enough oxygen. Heart disease causes fatigue in the same way that anemia and shallow breathing do. It leads to oxygen deprivation which exhausts the body.

MENTAL AND EMOTIONAL ISSUES

The answer to the question, “Why am I always so tired?” may also be that you are constantly under some kind of stress. The stress may be obvious, such as job-related stress or the challenge of moving, but it can also be related to a mood disorder such as anxiety or depression.

If you are always tired, do an internal check of your emotions. Are you often sad or disinterested in things that used to be pleasurable? If so, your fatigue may be related to clinical depression. Do you often feel anxious or worried? Then you may have an energy-robbing anxiety disorder. Tiredness is a symptom of both conditions. The good news is that both are treatable through a variety of methods including lifestyle changes, counseling and, if necessary, medication. If you think you are depressed or anxious, talk to your doctor.

TAKE SMALL STEPS

ChangeIt is often difficult to accept the need for change, and it can be even harder to actually make lasting changes. If you are already feeling exhausted, the idea of needing to change things in your life might seem completely overwhelming. This can be especially true when you are faced with making the lifestyle, health, diet, sleep, and other changes recommended throughout this site.

However, thing will not change if they stay the same! In other words, that feeling of “always tired, no energy” can only go away by making changes.

If you mind has been consumed with asking yourself why you always feel tired, then you are probably becoming more and more agitated. This agitation makes you prone to making desperate and often dramatic changes.

Unfortunately, dramatic changes usually don’t last and you will just be setting yourself up for failure. This failure may cause you to become depressed (or more depressed if depression is the cause of your fatigue), and you will begin to feel even more tired.

Instead of making dramatic changes, try taking smaller steps. If you are constantly tired, then there are probably several aspects of your life that should be changed. Instead of making all of these changes all at once, try addressing only one thing at a time.

If you are continuously asking yourself, “Why do I always feel so tired?” the first issue you should address is sleep. As you read above, there are many different facets to sleep that might need to be altered in order to eliminate your sleep debt.

The resources on this site will give you great guidance for making changes to your sleep habits in order to finally feel rested. However, even these changes should be made slowly in order to not increase your stress.

After you have addressed your sleep issues, you can begin to slowly improve your diet, amount of relaxation, exercise habits, and other aspects of your life that keep you always feeling tired.

Slowly, but surely, these small changes will begin having a profound effect on your body. Before you know it, you will be feeling more energized and youthful than you have in a long time.

Finding Your Unique Solution

It is time for you to stop saying, “I am always tired.” It is time for you to feel excited about life again. No matter how truly exhausted you are, you still have the power to overcome your condition.

Do not be overwhelmed, you can make yourself feel more alert, energized, and healthy.

The key is to learn more about the reasons behind your tiredness. As stated earlier, you are a unique person and that means the reasons for your tiredness are unique.

If you research tiredness while examining your circumstances, you will be able to find the answers you need. Not only will you determine the cause of your problem, you will discover your unique solution. You will be able to arm yourself with this information and permanently eradicate the feeling of tiredness.

The number 1 reason people don’t sleep is due to lack of water!
Your body is made up of 60% of it!
If it doesn’t have enough whater it starts to take water from other places like muscle etc so it cant get the water it needs for more important parts, its the same with the stuff in food. Its important to drink lots of water. Like 4 cups a day!

your body actually needs more like 8-10 cups of water a day. As far as not enough water being the reason for people being tired, probably not.

I am 27 years old, I have no energy & tired constantly. I have to push myself to do things around the house & outside. The moment I hit the couch I don’t want to get up and do anything anymore and the moment I hit the bed, I’m out like a light! I sleep the whole night (I get 8 hours) & I still don’t want to wake up in the morning. I have never been a morning person but it doesn’t explain the tiredness through out the day! I eat healthy from time to time, not everyday, and do exercise when I have the energy. I can’t motivate myself to exercise since I’m so tired! I don’t have any weight gain….just wondering what’s wrong & what I can do to fix it!

I am 27 and feel the same way as you Jenn! Since I’ve had my son, its gotten worse. I’ve tried a lot of the tips or tricks to fix it – starting an exercise routine, change my diet, I was on medication for depression, quit smoking, drink lots of water… Yet, I still feel the same and in the past 10 months have gained 60 pounds. I also noticed within the past year specifically that mentally I seem to have problems – become very forgetful, “spacey”, harder to focus and retain information. I’m in my 2nd year of online college and it has become so much harder – no because the classes have become harder per se, but harder for me to ‘read that chapter’ or recall the answers to a quiz that I should already know. I also have constant headaches, irratablility, and a grocery list of other issues that I’m sure ya’ll don’t wanna know, lol… The last time I seen a doctor was 2 years ago and they had wanted to test me for Hypothyroidism but my insurance got dropped and I never went back…

Hi Jenn, sounds like you have a lack of oxygen carrying capacity.
Get a blood sample test done to check your blood count.
This should help at least. Try drinking oxygenated bottled water!

Try doing a TSH (aka Thyroid Stimulating Hormone) Test and see if your levels are normal. I am HYPO which means I was always feeling sluggish no matter what time of the day it was until I did my test and went on meds, it worked! Don’t overdose on the Vitamin B12, one week shots are a bit much I think but then again Im not a doctor :)

I’m also 15, I do the same thing. During the school year, I go to bed at 10ish, then wake up at 7. I also take a nap when I get home, but I’m still always tired! Do you think maybe we are tired because we get too much sleep? Sometimes during the summer, I get 15 hours or more, and I’m still tired the rest of the day.

I came to a conclusion about the reason why I’m so tired all the time an all I want to do is sleep.. Me and my boyfriend have been fighting off an on for 2 weeks, I’ve realized ever since then i’ve been extremely exhausted, an very very depressed. This depression has caused me horrible fatigue an wanting to just sleep all the time, even though I had slept enough.. So I’m convinced my lack of energy has came from just that. Now the question is..do I have enough in me to change that, cause it is effecting my life.

As the same as lizzy, I am 25 and for the past two years I have been tired. I am a male relatively thin/muscular and I work out at least 3x per week. My friends and coworkers say it is unnatural for someone my age to be as tired as I am. I have tried sunlight, working out, changing my diet, antidepressants, inhalers, coffee, antihistamines, sleeping more, etc. I have no clue what to do to relieve the unrelenting tiredness.

I’ve felt excessively tired ever since I was diagnosed with mono 3 years ago. Th doctors say its no longer in my system so they cant understand why I’m still tired. I got diagnosed with mild sleep apnea, and just had surgery on my nose to help me sleep tired…but I’m still exhausted every day

Reply

Mike September 28, 2011 at 2:07 pm

Same here, Bobby. I have had mono twice (at 19 during college and again at 26). I am now 29 and tired constantly. The docs have ruled out thyroid problems and tell me my white blood count and blood tests appear normal. I am about to consult with a sleep specialist, but not confident they will find anything. I feel like I need to sleep 12+ hours a day just to feel rested and function!

I had mono at age 18 and have been very low energy ever since (I am now 38). I have had every test known to man and still have found no medical reason for the constant fatigue. I just know that the tiredness is linked to the mono somehow. I hope that someone will figure out the connection someday.

I’m 17 and had mono a year ago and since I have had little energy like you. It is awful, I also lost a lot of weight I haven’t been able to put back on. I’m always tired, take a nap after school everyday. I got a new mattress and sleep just as much as my brother but he is far from tired everyday. I don’t know what to do.

Reply

kat November 15, 2011 at 3:20 pm

Does anyone have any tips that help them with this? I see so many similar stories to mine. I am 39 now, almost 40. I had mono at 18, lost a lot of weight back then, but have struggled with depression & fatigue ever since (and a tendency to gain weight now.)

The constant fatigue makes it very difficult to do anything about it. No matter how much sleep I get, how much I eat, drink or exercise – It may help for a short time, but I still fall back into the depression/fatigue trap. I’ve been tested for everything I can think of: thyroid, blood sugar, anemia, etc – up to and including even tests for viral infections and std’s – nothing. I am told I’m perfectly healthy. My Dr. has tried prescription Vitamin D and Vitamin B6. And we’ve tried various anti-depressants, along with several combinations of both sleep aids and/or energy-elevating meds. The only 2 things that appear to help at all (minimally) are Vitamin D and Adipex (appetite suppressant that tends to increase energy).
Still though, I get anywhere from 6-10 hrs of sleep per night and STILL take a nap every day sometime between 3 and 6. If I can’t get that nap, I am miserable, cranky, and way-overtired and actually tend to sleep worse that night. All of this adversely affects everything from my marriage, to my job, to my kids, who try to understand it, but probably just think I’m lazy. I really don’t know what more to do.

For people who are unrealistically tired for no reason, it sounds more of a health problem. One very good example and common, but very hard to tell/diagnose is bowel worms (intestine worms, round worms). Intestine human worms have been within us for months and years unknowingly … In other words, these little mites may live, breed and feed inside you year after year without you knowing at all. However, there are many types that either live and feed from your intestines or other organs. Severe tiredness could be a reason, as a type of worm lives freely, sucking blood, nutrients and vital vitamins from within your body. Symtoms, such as amnesia, unexplained bloating, stomach cramps and of course “severe tiredness” may be the real cause. I recommend seeing a doctor and exposing in detail your problems, as it may be a health problem that will only get worse.

I’m usually tired throughout the day, but when it comes to about 5 pm I reach my lowest and can barely keep my eyes open, but when I go to bed and try to sleep it takes me 2-3+ hours to actually fall asleep. I take iron pills everyday, as well as B-6 pills that my doctor thought would help give me energy, but nothing works. I eat very healthy, I take all the meds my doctor tells me to, I exercise, and nothing works. I have a very hard time falling asleep most nights & when I do fall asleep I wake up constantly through the night. Then during the day I feel so tired! Another problem..my immune system sucks. From reading all of these posts it really alarms me how many of us experience this. It seems like many of you are just like me. You have tried so many things and nothing has worked. It is rare that I will have days that I actually feel awake and I cherish those days. I often wonder if there is something biologically wrong with me. Or perhaps that I make myself anxious by constantly worrying about this….and that the anxiety actually makes me more fatigued. It really is hell to go through life like this. I hope we all figure it out.

very practical solution to all of you is go to the doctor’s and get consulted and get a diagnosis. I really believe most of you probably have just nutritional deficiencies, like b12 or iron or something. I myself have this problem of being tired all the time, so I’m just going to get supplements. I have a friend, she takes iron supplements and she has energy for days, which is great. so go get your iron levels checked and I’m sure you will find the solution for your lethargic lifestyle.

ashley November 17, 2011 at 11:43 pm

“just take an iron supplement”–this will not solve the problem….especially if you don’t have a low iron level. Which is the case for me….I have normal hemoglobin, hematocrit, platelet, WBC, RBC and all the other labs ran through a complete blood count, but go to nursing school full time, work full time and have a family. By the time I get home from school or work, I can barely function, but have to push through my day for the kids and schoolwork. While I am on the subject of supplements…..you should not just take a vitamin or mineral unless you have an actual deficiency, so while your friend is taking those iron supplements, I hope she has a reason to be taking them; which can also cause stomach cramps, constipation, nausea and vomiting.

I’m 20 years old, and I definitely suffer from that constant tired feeling. I usually end up with more energy at night and tell myself to go to the gym and study and all that stuff, but then when I wake up in the morning I can barely function. Earlier today I almost fell asleep while driving home. It really bothers me because there are a lot of things I want/need to do and I never have the energy for them. Not really sure what I can do due to my current financial situation, but yknow, its worth it to ask around to see what people can tell me.

I eat a heathly diet and excercise reguarly. If you have away to help it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you :)

To anyone, 2004 I was diagnosed with Hereditary Hemochromatosis (iron overload) If anyone that has northern european ancestry or has received donated blood could possibly have this disease. I’ve felt excessively tired since I was in my teens, now that I am 45..I have major organ damage. If you are not getting the right answers, look up the symptoms, look at family members, past and present. It might be there. One out of every two hundred American’s with northern european ancestry carries this mutation.

Hi Dylan, KayKay and Kellie Rose, I do think that at a young age it’s not right to be as tired as you all seem to be. It may be an idea to see the doctor just in case there is an underlying medical problem that needs to be addressed. Wishing you all well and hope things get better for you soon xxx

Hi all,
I am just 14 years old and have felt most of the effects described by everyone else, for about a year now. I go to bed at 9:30, but i used to listen to my ipod untill around 11. I wake up at 6am to get a school coach, and come back home at around 5pm. I have a few stresses, but who at this age doesnt? I usually have a normal-sized breakfast, but I usually skip out lunch because of things like basket ball and swimming, and i only have some crisps and a chocolate bar. I have a normal-sized dinner. I doubt many poeple in school feel the same way as i do. If you have any advice, please email me at [email protected]. Many thanks :)

Hi!
It happens to me too, but i always force myself into filling my life with activities…except on my day off , i allow myself to sleep up to 12 hours.
in other days , i don’t let my body get used to the laziness, i just get my a$$ off the bed and do something! the key is to find something to motivate you : something you love doing ?(no it’s not masturbating , that will make you MORE tired-lol-) i stopped listening to the music all the time because i tend to wake up with a song in my head and i don’t like that because the repetition of the song is annoying!well for me it is !
Life is about balance , if you work hard and deserve a break then do it ! if you have been working so long and it’s time for a vacation take time off (make sure to plan everyday of your vacation or you will find yourself sleeping to fill the emptiness)
We may feel tired sometimes, but it’s not always physically, it might be mentaly-emotionaly- just give your brain a break!
Nutrition is important too and could have something to do with it: don’t eat junk food !

Wow do I feel better knowing it’s not just me. I am 42 and exhausted all the time. I have seen my mother suffer from this fatigue for most of her life. I see my older sister suffering the same way. So, a year ago I decided to talk to my doctor. She ran tests including a very specific thyroid test, but found nothing. I even did a sleep study overnight in a hospital. Nothing. With all of us experiencing this same problem, I am amazed that there aren’t more solutions out there. My mother is from Germany so I will look into the Hemochromatosis as well as the B-12 shots. Someone out there has got to find a solution to this awful phenomenon!

hello. When most people say “you look tired” its normally a case of seeing me yawning! but the exhaustion i feel everyday cannot possibly be classed as tiredness. when its difficult to even lift your arm off the table at lunch time! however, i get spells of tiredness like this throughout the day, sometimes i get boosts of energy durin the evening or morning. my eyes are effected too, they feel like they fall asleep and drift into my head and i loose control of them for about 2 seconds, kind of like blacking out. but then its fine! i do suffer with stress and i do live a hectic lifestyle! but for god sake im only 24!
any advice would be great!

Hi, I am 16 years of age and am constantly tired throughout the weeks of school. I had anaemia 2 years ago and my iron levels were depleted but are better now. At school there is so much homework and I catch the bus to an from school. I’m fine as soon as i eat dinner and go upstairs but when i sit down and do my homework i am constantly yawning and this is on a daily basis. I want to do my homework but by the tiredness and procrastination time goes by really fast and some nights i barely accomplish anything leaving me with even more homework for the next evening. This is not good as I am in year 11 and it’s leaving me with a lot of stress. I always look forward to my weekend to rest but having greek school friday night, tennis sat and sun mornings and usually going out saturday evenings/ nights doesn’t give much time for homework. I don’t always go out sat nights and i notice i always leave all my homework to sunday nights which isn’t good as it is last minute. What should I do?

I am 23 and suprisingly enough seemed to have developed a slight issue with fatigue of late.

It is only this year i have become tired… since giving up smoking oddly though i was never, what i would term as ‘heavily dependant’ on ciggarettes.

I can’t concentrate on work and seem to daydream a hell of alot nowadays. I just can’t seem to concentrate on one thing.

Its been four months since i gave up smoking. And i have actually become a healthier person in general, moving from domino’s pizza alot :) to healthier boring foods, salads, fruit, veg. I also have begun running all be it not that far as am not that fit and drink alot of water which i didnt used to in a bid to make me a healthier all round person. Why is this having the opposite effect i ask? The only thing i can put this down to is the changes to my lifestyle but surely my body would slowly be getting used to it…

I am always tired and have no energy. I think it might be something do to with the fact i am 27, living at home and unemployed. I dont have any friends and i am quite antisocial. I dont mean to be and i am very aware of the fact im so quite, so tired and not of much interest to anyone. I think the reasons might be something to do with what i mentioned and possibly a biological factor too. If i went to the Dr they would just put me on anti depressants again which would make me feel worse. I need something to help boost my energy, not sap it even more.

I would appreciate any advice from people?

I’ve had your symtoms for a long time. I took 1000mg of Vitamin B-12 every other day. It took about 24 hours to kick in. I felt calm, relaxed and I had way more energy throughout the day. From what I’ve read, B-12 remains in your liver for years which is good for your red blood cells whereas the other B vitamins do not get absorbed for more than a day or 2 by your system. Good luck with everything. Go to a clinic and talk to your doc.

Based on the fact that most people that posted a comment above are quite young, it’s possible that it’s hormones or because some of you guys are still growing. Hormones can fuel emotions that make us somewhat depressed and exhausted with life that we just want to sleep after the stress during school. Growing bodies may also explain body fatigue. It’s just a theory, I’m only 15, but I’m just trying to figure this out since it seems like a commonality among young people with a healthy diet and exercise.

Have lots of stress. bad sleeping habits(I belive which is due to life events). Hey all you tired out there, I myself share the “joy” of having no energy, and finally found out my diagnosis: ME/CFS (chronic fatigue syndrome) and I know there is a debate on whether this is a physical or mental illness, but the physical findings is overwhelming, if you’re lucky enough to get a doctor who knows that this is usually caused by a virus (perhaps XMRV) and helps you to carry out the necessary tests. The main physical symptoms are:
1) Leakage of specific proteins from blood to spinal fluid
2) Decreased blood circulation to the brain center
3) A kind of lactic acid from the virus the human body can not break down
It is a very common disease, but diagnosis and treatment methods are still in the pioneer phase.

All medical treatment in my country is free, but since this is not an official virus diagnosis of today, I am only offered psychological therapy, which I find ridiculous in treatment of virus.
In Norway we have a private clinic that treats with great success, after they investigate various possible causes such as viruses, fungi, heavy metal poisoning, etc. This clinic is in contact with international experts in the U.S. and Europe. You’ll find lots of information on the internet.
Good luck

If you are female your iron may be low! You may be anemic. When I was about 25 I was really tired. I would come home from work and collapse on the couch and not want to do anything. I yawned all the time. I had strong periods and I thought I ate well but I didn’t think much about the iron content in my food. Although I am pretty smart I didn’t make the connection between iron and feeling so tired. My Doctor tested my iron level and it was very low. My Doctor said that she was surprised I could still function at all. After several months on iron pills I was back to normal.

To this day I believe that I was anemic for much of my late teens and early 20′s. I still wonder how my life might have been different and what decisions I might have made differently if I had caught the anemia earlier. If you are female and often tired then get your blood tested for iron!!!! This is one of those things where there really is a little magic pill that can make it all better.

I have dozed off at this very computer countless times. I exercise 5 or more times a week. I eat healthy food. I even take B-complex vitamins. Nothing helps. I am on a medicine called Suboxone, though, and think this MAY be the cause of the sleepyness. However, I haven’t heard any other cases like mine from people who take it. I have heard of it making you drowsy, but not like this. The constant fatigue I get makes me stressful. I just want to have a normal life… where I am alert and AWAKE! Ok, listen up people: I too was very tired, always getting sick, all of the doctors thought I was crazy- it started when I was 19 and each year got worse- I had kids, it got worse, I put on weight, and it wouldn’t come off- finally I bugged my obgyn for 5 years and he did a thyroid ultrasound- and guess what- I had thyroid cancer- this could be you- I also now have what is called celiac disease which is a gluten intolerance that appeared post thyroid surgery.
Don’t believe your doctors, they don’t know shit- I knew since I was 19 something was wrong- they let my life be destroyed for 11 years before the cancer was diagnosed. And another 10 years and my meds aren’t right- we have all been exposed to lots of radiation and thyroids don’t like radiation- go gluten free- have a throid ultrasound and arm yourself with knowledge- do the research

I was in your shoes and still walk there sometimes

The comments above are very familiar to me. Having symptoms of debilitating fatigue since I was 19, at the age of 42 I was diagnosed with mercury and lead poisoning. After my doctor performed an environmental survey on me, he ordered tests to determine metal toxicity. It’s something you could do, at least to have it ruled out, from the long list of what can cause fatigue, everything from diet to lack of exercise, water, etc. Since beginning treatments for metal toxicity, I am starting to feel better. Good luck to you all!

CELIAC DISEASE…. Everyone Google it. It is gluten intolerance. It is quite common but most don’t realize it (1 out of 100). Basically, gluten is causing issues with the villi in your intestines, the villi then cannot absorb the proper amount of nutrients. Hence, you don’t have the energy to function normally. Google it, get tested, try not eating any food with gluten in it for a while. Ya, it sucks not being able to eat things with wheat (which is all the yummy stuff out there) but you’ll feel better and the long term consequences suck even more.

Hey, I read this and none of this applies to me. I eat a balanced diet, and I’m not depressed. I get enough sleep, and I never wake up at night to go to the restroom. If I had anemia, my parents would have told me when I was younger. Anemia is a genetic disease, right? I’m a teenager and I’m wondering if my hunger and tiredness is because of my horomones. Is that possible? I understand that I can maybe increase my level of exercise, but I get just even more tired. Is there a serious problem here, or am I overreacting?

All you tired young ladies get your Doctor to check your iron!!! Anemia is NOT inherited and you don’t catch it from other people. If you don’t get enough iron through your food or through supplements then you will be anemic. Iron is critical to allowing your red blood cells to hold oxygen. Low oxygen in your blood means your brain isn’t getting enough oxygen and so you feel tired all the time. Women get hit with a double whammy in that we loose blood every month that your iron deprived body must replace.

Wow, didn’t know so many people feel the same way I do. I am 26 and recently discovered with my doctor that I suffer from anxiety and depression. She put me on lexapro and it works great after I get up and get moving during the day. But when its almost time to get off work I’m exhausted, my job isn’t that stressful and things are great at home. But I find myself wanting to take a nap everyday and no matter how tired I am I usually don’t fall asleep until midnight. What else can I do to be able to fall asleep and stay asleep at night?

Okay this is just crazy. I am only 33 yrs old and have had many of the same problems that everyone has listed above. The funny thing is that I was the super skinny tall child with tons of energy. I miss that. After my children were born it seemed as if it just kept getting worse. Now my sleep issues just seem like they are past the point of return. The doctors seem to just think I’m crazy because I’ve gained weight and tired ALL THE TIME!! They have tested my thyroid and iron, and no issues there. I’ve known something has just not been right for about 5 years cause I get bloating in the stomach, my hormone cycle has been getting further apart each month and heavier, and all that I want to do is sleep. I am extremely active and exercise all the time, I have a job that is not too stressful and I just need help. Another weird fact is that I have been off of work for over a month due to a sports injury and sleep about 8-10 hours every night. After I wake up and get the kids to school I am taking a nap. I will work out and take another nap. Take my vitamins and recently tried fish oil. What is going on???? I have a strong feeling mine is hormone related.

I don’t have kids but i feel the same way, I am single, 29 years old and I have astressful life, I never had to drink coffee, but I felt like if I don’t do it now, I would live life miserable. I used to work and be at the gym 4 times a week. I would be discipline and good …I am dancer and I don’t practice often, I want to be in bed sleep and sleep and sleep. I have a pretty much good sleep schedule and I do have problems like anyone else, I address in therapy to help keep it up. I do try “usana” vitamins and helped me a lot, my friend recommended it is pharmaceutical vitamins, is not those you can buy every corner, this one doctors created and the 2 days I took I felt fantastic. Also Rav3 is a great energy drink that is far away similiar than Red Bull, which Red bull can cause a lot healthy problems. I do recommend you to try those. If you work out and have time for naps maybe A healthy pack vitamins and rav 3 will support you.
I still have to get more for myself and change more my diet and go back doing yoga, is hard for me to be consistent. Any questions email me. [email protected] Good lucky

I’m 16 and no matter how much sleep I get I’m always tired. I’ve fallen asleep standing up and I get cold really easy which are usually two signs of anemia but my iron level is good and my skin isn’t pale. Really hoping someone can answer this.

To get you through the day... May 9, 2011 at 10:38 pm

I’m in the same boat as all of you. Unfortunately, last year I had picked up a job that required me to be into work at 5:30am. I did loads of research and found Modafinil (aka Provigil and Altertech). This is an alertness medication typically used for Narcoleptic people and Shift Sleep Disorders. One relatively new finding is that it also helps as a anti-depression medication. So whether your tiredness is medical or emotional, this should help a bit. But remember, this is only a temporary fix. You should still find the underlying causes and treat them asap.

Hope this helps a bit. I helped me.

Right now, I’m exhausted and I got 8 hours of sleep last night. I had the window up a little bit, the room was comfortable, I had my favorite blanky around me, and I fell asleep. Hoping that I’d be rested up in the morning for my classes but I’m not. I’m 23 and have been suffering this for ever. It greatly affected me in junior high/high school and is affecting me now! I was on B12 pills and the shots, but now all of my vitamin levels are normal. I do have depression, and have been on medication for it, but none of them worked. Even when I’m not depressed, I’m tired!! I exercise more frequently now that I don’t have a vehicle, I have an excuse to go for a walk… nothing has worked. I’ve been to my doctor, I’ve been to counselling, I’ve been exercising, staying away from caffeine beverages, keeping my mind busy, but nothing works. Is there anything else that I could do?

I think you should all take a hereditary hemochromatosis or a hypothyroiolism blood test ASAP!! Because i feel the same as all you and i just found out that my brother has hereditary hemochromatosis and that i might have it too. I just took those test and God willing i will be ok. But, plz do you selves a favor and go to your doctors.

Hello. I am 14 years old. I am in high school and on a soccer team. I sleep well through the night, though I sometimes get to bed a bit late. I take naps a lot, however, afterwards, I always feel just as tired as when I fell asleep. I am constantly fatigued. It seems that by the middle of the day I become exhausted and have trouble staying awake in classes. This is affecting my schoolwork. Any theories on why I am so tired or advice for minimizing my exhaustion?

Hi. I am 23 y.o. and ever since I started a new job, I have been overwhelmed by chronic fatigue. Ironically, the job hours are very good and not at all stressful, I am home by 4pm, I have time to cook, rest, study watch some TV and I go to bed between 11pm and midnight and wake up by 7am every weekday. When I wake up, I ALWAYS feel hungover!
Sleeping earlier doesn’t help – it just as if I can’t function in early in the morning. the feeling subsides as the day progresses (say 10-11am) leaving me tired for the whole day till i get to bed. Short naps, rest and relaxation, nothing seems to work.
I am convinced it is anxiety-induced (probably over my career and future, ‘cos i am a type-A, and got a little OCD- which people interpret as efficient and hardworking).
I have started working towards being less anxious and I’m making little progress.
I guess once you can identify your stressor, it’s a step towards relieving it and feeling more energized.

I was suffering from foggy brain with a constant feeling of tiredness. I tried everything. Dhea htp5 vitamin d different pillows gluten free diet lexapro. When all was said and done I tried 2 tablespoons of raw unfiltered apple cider vinegar with “the mother” diluted in 8 ounces of water for 2 weeks. I now have no foggy brain and lots of energy. I am quick witted again and back to normal. Give it a try. It is a natural stimulant and will remove any heavy metals from your body. Good luck!

I went for a sleep study last year (I am 31) and was diagnosed with narcolepsy, which explains my constant tiredness. I highly recommend sleep studies. The only way you can make yourself feel better is by knowing what the problem is, and having a sleep study at a sleep center can help diagnose many types of sleep disorders.

I’m a 21yr old male. As far as I know I’m very healthy. I hit the gym regularly, well recently I haven’t been able to as I’ve been to fatigued to even work out like I used to. I’m not stressed or depressed. I sleep 8hrs/night, sometimes on the weekend I get almost 10hrs of sleep per night. I saw the doctor before about it and honestly he wasn’t very helpful. This is starting to effect my everyday life; any advice from people in a similar situation?

Every morning when I wake up for school my body feels like it needs more sleep. Maybe it`s because I sleep later during the day or it`s because I wake up during the night. Not really sure. Mostly every time, I`m either playing basketball or soccer and that`s a form of exercise or routine that can help me to stay awake. So my question is why am I always yawning once I`m sitting in class?

I’m 27 years old and a mother to a 5 year old. I too am always tired and can’t seem to really function.. This has became a problem for me. I could sleep day in and day out all day everyday. I’m always going to college and will be starting a fast pacing job come August. I am hoping to get my doctor to try to get that I am really dragging. She always replies that I’m a mom, I should be tired? Tired sure, but NOT this tired. It’s really frustrating to me.. They can put people on the moon but can’t fix what seems to be a simple thing.. Good Luck To us ALL!!!

Hi. I’m tired all the time. I’m 48 I work part-time for a charity and have been there just over three months. i don’t really like it. I left my last job of 14 years somewhat reluctantly following an investigation, I was very hurt. This was also my church so I had to leave that too and am searching for a new one. I have serious weight issues I know which doesn’t help the early arthritis. I want to cry all the time. I have forgotten what “I” used to feel like. I have no energy to exercise. My skin often itches and my hair has become very brittle. I’d love to sleep properly, I wake twice a night at least for the loo even though I have reduced my evening intake of liquids. I would cope much better if I could just sleep and stay asleep. Please help. Thanks

I am always tired. I had a sleep apena study on me in 2003. I had a mild case. I am 45, when I turn 35 this is when my tiredness begin. I get sleep sometime, but I drink plenty of 2% milk. Could milk be a problem for me? I really love milk. I drink 2% normally, but I like soy, chococlate, strawberry, organic it doesn’t matter. I do need to exercise more that should help me. I only walk, take the stairs at work and run after my 6 year old son.

WOW!!! There are a lot of us, huh? Look at all these posts. I feel like everyone in my life cannot sympathize with me. Life feels extremely hard for me and in fact it’s pretty easy given all the factors. I live alone, I don’t pay much rent and I work when I feel like it. I have had this issue for most of my life. I could easily sleep for 12 hours and still be tired. I get a lot of exercise and I eat pretty well. I am healthy. I am stress free but simple tasks can seem so hard for me. My body always aches and I always want to sleep. I am small 4’11 and 100 Lbs. I am 27 but I feel so heavy, sometimes standing in the shower seems too hard so I have to sit. Finding the motivation to do anything is soo hard. I am not lazy but it’s like there is something in my head telling me I have to sleep, that I can’t accomplish anything. I feel like this is a mental sickness. I am literally addicted to sleep. I love sleeping so much but I really want to live, I want to be out doing things, but even walking seems like too much work. Ugh, I wish there was something for me…..I’m just glad knowing I am not the only one. There should be more research on this, because this affects our entire lives.

Victoria – it could be candida overgrowth. You need to take good probiotics, lots of yogurt and lay off any food that is white – sugar, flour, rice – at least for a time. Google candida diets and you may find what you need to know. It certainly has worked for me.

Now I’m no doctor, but those of you who are under the age of 20 and still in shool are bound to be tired… school is the most stressful time in your life with all the exams and studying you’re supposed to do!

I am 27 and had suffered with tiredness for years. Alot of my friend and coworkers all said that I must be anemic as I’m very slim and eat healthy, so anemia must be the problem. I went to the doctors for testing but nothing was found (and my doctor as usual told me to better my diet when I know I already eat healthy! Hate doctors!).
I assumed I was getting enough exsersise as I walk to work and back every day, but a friend of mine gave me a yoga dvd to work out to first thing every morning. I must admit that for the first week or so getting up an hour earlier than usual fir this yoga dvd almost killed me! But I’m really benefiting for it now and have bundles of spare energy, I feel like a new person!
I’m now progressing, doing an hour of yoga when I get up and a half hour pulse work out. Not only am I sleeping well and feeling far better than I could have imagined but I can also put my palms flat on the floor with out bending my knees!
I hope this helps.

I feel the same exact way. I have a 3 yr old and work a lotbbut on my lunch breaks I always feel the need for a nap. My way to give myself an “upper” is by taking caffeine pills. (which I know is horrible but its the only think that gives me a boost to wake up) I can sleep all day every. I feel ashamed because I know its not fair to my daughter.. I could be using those hours to spend with her. I do suffer from depression and am being treated for it. I never sleep a whole night through and can’t fall asleep right away. I am not a lazy person.. but this fatigue is ruining my life. What can I do? Thank you

Wow, it is nice to see that alot of people have the same problem, however, their aren’t that many people giving advice. First of all, for you people that are still teenagers, you don’t really have a problem. Being a teenager means you dont have anything important that you need be doing, im sure your stressful day of going to high school is very burdensome. You are going through hormonal changes, just wait, it will probably pass.
Second of all, there are some of you who obviously don’t want to take the proper steps to attempt to remedy the problem, DIET and EXERCISE are number 1. If you eat fast food everyday, and never go to the gym, then dont ask why your tired, ask why your lazy, dont waste our time.
Third, for those of you like me, 25, eat healthy, take vitamin supplements, exercise 4-5 times a week, it seems like there is a problem. I tried getting off caffiene thinking that I was just crashing all the time, but with or without it, im hitting a wall daily. Not only am i tired physically, but mentally im not on the same level as i usually am. i have no motivation and want to find a bed all day. I get 7-8 hours of sleep a night. Im going to try to cut that back to 5-6. I hear that getting too much sleep will make you tired as well. I dont have a solution, but im fighting the tired fight as well, and will update if i find anything out. Truck on my exhausted friends. Btw Jenny, no one cares that you can touch the floor, how is that supposed to help anyone, find a friend who cares.

i know i usually sleep through the night, i try to stay on a routine, i exercise, im health, but for as long as i can remember ive always been going though about half my days feeling like my eyes where fighting to stay open. if i had to come up with an answer why, id say its probably something i could fix if i focused on it enough. for someone like me, just try to relax, breath deeply, take time out for yourself, go to your favorite restaurant for lunch once a week, try to laugh as much as possible, and also go to bed earlier and try to get in the routine of waking up naturally without an alarm early in the morning. and some of you are probably oversleeping

Diet is a huge issue. It affects how aware, alert, and awake feeling you are. To not include diet as a cause for daily fatigue is a mistake. That ‘I want to take a nap’ feeling right after eating a Big Mac isn’t a coincidence.

I’m a very happy and relaxed person and live the American dream! Why do I still get overly tired and need to take a nap in the late mornings just to get thru the days? I’m a fairly healthy person also! Something has got to be wrong! I use to be very hyper and active and now I’m not! I want to be very active again! Any suggestions?

I’m a 42 year old female and have been fighting low energy since I was 13. So, no it may not go away, and your responsibilities increase over time, so don’t ignore it.

I was tested for low calcium and iron during pregnancy, and have found that it is important to keep up the calcium supplementation for energy and attitude. However, the iron tests and thyroid tests have come back normal. I have gone gluten free and half organic, with l-o-t-s of supplements that I’ve researched via the internet. They help if I take them daily (not sure which are the biggies).

It is a rare day that I feel able to work around the house normally. My job was stressful, but now I am not working (thankfully we are still fine for now), so it’s not just job stress. I get depressed when I’m exhausted and can’t do anything, even after a full night’s sleep. The week or two before and the week of my cycle I have increased symptoms (sleep issues, migraine, irritability, crushing fatigue). I did not figure this out until a few years ago since I wasn’t tracking symptoms relative to my cycles and often felt better when my cycle started.

Since I haven’t seen these on the boards above, check out “bioidentical hormone therapy” it’s for women and men (testosterone, etc). I’m looking into trying a topical USP bioidentical 2% progesterone cream from a compounding pharmacy to start. There is also a possibility of T4/T3 imbalance. But I’m starting with the theory of estrogen dominance.

There were some other good suggestions for tests above and some treatments for candida, heavy metals, and thyroid cancer…but thought I’d throw these ideas out there into the mix for men and women to consider and it may be a hormone imbalance causing this.

By the way – expect that your doctor won’t be familiar with this. They may want to put you on synthetic/birth control hormones or HRT. Don’t do it – unless you research it a lot and feel comfortable with the risks!!! As for me, I have enough problems and won’t go back to these drugs. Also, I found that SSRI antidepressants only mask the problem and cause their own issues.

Please people, until you find the solution, you have to be your own doctor and educate yourself. Watch everything you eat and do and when it happens during the month. Track this and note anything that works for you (what you eat, drink, supplements, stressors). This will help you understand your own symptoms and help your doctor understand you.

Find a good doctor who will listen and work with you (I’m still working on this one) to find a solution – and then check EVERYTHING they tell you online before accepting that they are an authority and that you are comfortable with the risks of their recommendations. I found this out the hard way, people!

Best wishes and God bless. The LORD loves you and is with you always. Turn to Him and pray for His help and guidance in discovering whatever Your answer is, and for His strength to support you until your deliverance arrives!

I’m in highschool actually, and I’m constantly hearing myself say “I’m tired.” After I’ve had a solid 10 hours of sleep. I sleep like a rock, because I have to turn my alarm clock all the way up or I’ll sleep right through it. (I sometimes still sleep through it) During the school year, I go to bed at 9 and get up at 7:30, then leave for school at 7:35 because school starts at 8. If I try to get up at 7, I’m so tired that I’m always battling falling asleep in class.

My whole family has a history of thyroid problems, and the numbers from my thyroid tests are always on the edge, but still normal enough that I can’t get medication. I have all the classic symptoms of thyroid problems, but the blood tests say otherwise.

I also have many symptoms of anemia. I’ve always had very heavy cycles, and I don’t like any red meat, so I don’t eat much iron, so it would make sense. Especially since recently everytime I’m on my cycle I get really dizzy and sick and feel like I’m going to pass out.(Yes, I’ve been to the doctor) But again, all my blood tests come back perfectly.

We’ve also tried blood sugar tests, and tests for diabetes, and both are also perfect.

I did get mono a couple months ago, but this has been going on for over a year and a half. I was being homeschooled and was at home all day when it first started, so I really don’t think it’s stress. I was told that it’s just because I’m a teenager, which really stinks because I’m turning down activities with my friends because it would mean that I would get home at 10:30-11, and I would be too tired at school the next day. I drink plenty of water, but I’m not waking up to go to the bathroom. (I do every once in a while, but that’s every once in a great while) I have plenty of schedule, and I eat pretty darn well.

There’s my rant, I guess I’ll just put up with it. *sigh*

There was one week where I was at a friend’s house and we went to bed at 10 and got up at 6:30, and I had to go to the nurse everyday to take a nap in one of the beds, which means that I missed almost all of my class. So this is definitely a problem because I’m not paying attention in class, because I’m trying so hard not to fall asleep.

Sorry, I keep remembering things. :P I’m very pale, and can’t seem to get any darker no matter what. I also have very dark bags underneath my eyes. My parents always joke that people must think that I’m never fed, but I am a very healthy bodyweight. (5’6″ and 125 lbs.)

One day, left alone to sleep, I went to bed at midnight and slept until 6:00 PM the next day then easily went back to bed at 10:00 that night and slept until 10:00 AM the next day.

As for working out, I am a dancer(sort of :P) and usually stick to getting my exercise from that because I never feel like doing anything else, but I do have quite a bit of fun dancing still.

Alright, just one more, I promise!

I was diagnosed with anxiety and OCD(but not the traditional, “knocking on the door three times” thing) and put on medication.(Fluoxetine) I never had the symptoms at first after taking the meds, I was just happier and was able to fall asleep much quicker, as it used to take me over two hours to fall asleep because of a racing mind. My dad thought that the tiredness might be because of my medication though, so we tried upping the prescription from 20 mg to 30 mg, and we tried bringing it down to 10 mg. My doctor and I decided that I had come to a point in my life to where I can go off of it, so a little over a month ago I did just that. Other than having a couple panic attacks, I’ve had no problems… But my tiredness didn’t change.

It’s been about a year since I last got my thyroid checked, so I’m due for another check. Is it sad that I’m actually hoping that my levels are bad?

In my lifetime, I’ve been tested for quite the number of things, because when I was little I was losing weight from picking apart my food (part of my anxiety). So I’ve been tested for all sorts of allergies, and I’ve been tested for cancer and all that fun stuff.

Hi I’m 15 (there seem to be a lot of us on here) and lately I’ve been constantly tired. During the school year I’d get like 5 or 6 hours of sleep and be sort of tired during the day but I could still go without naps and exercised every day. If I would get 7 or 8 hours of sleep I would have limitless energy. Now it’s summer and I get like 10 hours in every night, but I always feel exhausted. I feel too tired to work out anymore; also I’m never hungry. Could I be suffering from depression or anxiety? Please help!!!

I feel like I’ve only had energy spurts throughout my life. In 2000, I was dx with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Cytomegalovirus (CMV). Was told CMV is a cousin to Mono but can last 2-5 years where Mono is up to a year. Well, Never feeling I got over the CMV, I was DX with Multuple Sclerosis in 2006. There are so many auto-immune diseases out there with the same symptoms it’s takes time to pinpoint exactly what it is. CMV has to be specifically looked for in blood. It doesn’t just show up so request your Drs test for that. We all have CMV in our bodies but if it gets “haywired” that’s when the probs, start.
One very important thing I want to add!!!! I went to 7 drs over an 8 month span before the CMV DX. I felt frustrated, crazy, humiliated etc. as I m sure many of you have also. I’ve come to the decision, I/YOU are paying these DRs for a service!!! This is THEIR JOB!!! They work for you. I Hope that each of you continue to persist in your quest for a DX. If the DR you have gone to gives you a hard time, “you don’t have that pain” blah blah blah, HE”S NOT HEARING YOU. You know your body better than anyone!! Persevere until you find the correct DR. & DX. I still stuggle with fatigue. I take Provigil for that. Helps me stay awake but still feel tired. Good luck to you. If you would like to contact me Tera Brown-Metcalf on Facebook. Make sure to add a note like “always tired” or something so I will add you. God Bless ^_^

Too much sleep is a bad thing.Try sleeping less than 8 hours a day,Remember a hour of sleep before midnight is worth 2 hours of sleep and a half hour nap during the day is worth a hour of sleep before midnight. Look up sleep hygiene on goggle and change you sleeping habits. Also no caffeine or food or stress after 7 pm it will keep you processing while you should be sleeping . Hope this helps

I’m 18 and the thought of waking up with energy ready to go in the mornings is a foreign concept to me these days. It would take me a few hours to get going, but only recently have I been beginning to feel totally exhausted all day. I start college in a couple of weeks, and I’m really worried that this will keep me from excelling in my studies. I don’t need this stress affecting me as I’m trying to enjoy the final days of my summer filled with responsibility. None of my friends or family can relate to my problem. Sure, they feel tired occasionally in the afternoon or evening, but none have experienced it the magnitude that I have. I just wish I were normal. I have several other physical problems too. I want to find a solution as to why I feel the way I do desperately, but the bright side (depending on how you look at it) is that I “just” may have hypothyroidism (a few of my relatives have this), but I do worry that I may possibly have sleep apnea, which I dread. I won’t know for sure until I go in to do testing before I start college, but I ask that you guys pray for me in finding a solution for this, and I’ll do the same for you. It’s relaxing to know I’m not alone, though.

Glad to know I’m not the only one with this issue! I am tired ALL the time. I can sleep all night long, take naps throughout the day, and I’m still tired. It gets to the point where my friends ask me to go out with them but all I want to do is lie down and take another nap so I make up stupid excuses about why I can’t go out! I’m tired just writing this ha.

I’ve been feeling fatigued and tired since I was like 14 or 15. Now I’m 18 and in college. I don’t know for sure if I’m severely depressed and if that’s what’s causing fatigue, but I think so. I don’t feel motivated to do anything and just wanna stay home always. (I live near the university). Now that I’m in college, I’m constantly stressed out about financial issues and schoolwork. Because I’m so tired all the time, I don’t think I even look my age.

I’m exhausted all the time. I’m 27 and the problem started about 6 months ago. No matter how much sleep I get, I feel like I need more and can barely drag myself out of bed in the morning. I always have dark circles under my eyes, a problem I’ve never had. I had more energy when my kids were small babies even though I only got about 5 hours of broken sleep a night, if that. I don’t understand why this is happening. I drink plenty of water, I have a relatively healthy diet most of the time, I’m not overweight, I work out 4 or 5 days a week, I do everything this article says to do to help fight fatigue, but it doesn’t seem to help. I do have the stress of going to school full time and raising 2 young kids, but it’s not excessive stress. After reading this article, I’m thinking I might possibly have a thyroid problem because nothing else fits.

Just eat right, work out, take vitamins, etc. We all know what to do. You just have to have some will power and dedication.

I have the same problem as all of you. And it only worsens. Ive researched countless times, and found no leads. Ive been tested for momo/slugish thyroid and they said i was clean and had a perfect thyroid. Im starting to wonder about the Sleep Apnea thing. Sleep studies are expensive, so i may never be able to treat it. This seems to be an epidemic across america. I just dont get it.

I think they’ve nailed it for me. I don’t go to the gym anymore, I’m a bit overweight and I only get about 4 hours of sleep whilst dealing with sleep apnea, and having no work causes a lot of stress for me so I guess all in all I’m pretty screwed. I’m gonna fall asleep one day and have a heart attack.

I am 27 years old and I am having the same problem as all of you. Mine started at the age of 19, when I had my daughter. I am always tired and it has been a big cause of some of my problems with my significant other. I work third shift but I am in a different town every night leaving between 7:30 and 8 to start by 9pm. We work until we are done and then fight the morning traffic and have to stay awake to get my daughter to school. I sleep sometimes until it is time to get ready for work and just don’t understand why I am always so tired. My fiancee is tired of never seeing me and says that all I do is sleep, my daughter feels like I don’t love her because I never have the energy to do anything with her. If anyone could give me some advise on where I should start with this it would be appreciated. I have insurance but it is horrible, but all advice would be helpful. I need to save myself, and my relationship with my family before the damage is irreversible.

I’m 18 and overweight, I wake up at night a lot, and I’ve been sick the past couple of days so I’ve been extra tired, but even b4 this I’ve always been too tired, I know its most likely cuz of my weight but I can’t find the time to exercise most of the time because of my fatigue…..I am very frustrated.

I have been suffering with tiredness what seems like my whole life. I have been diagnosed with anemia several times but even when I take iron tablets and my anemia has ‘gone away’ I still feel over tired. I sleep from 12pm till 7am, come morning I don’t want to get out of bed, by about 9am I feel ok, but after getting my little boy to school and by the time I get home I usually fall back to sleep for about 2 hours. On the days that Im at work, I feel myself around dinner time becoming so tired I struggle to keep my eyes open, when I get home I put my boy to bed around 7pm, then I fall to sleep for about 2 hours. So as you can see I get plenty of sleep. Sometimes my whole body feels achy as if I might have flu symptoms coming but then it never progresses into an illness I just feel tired and drowsy. I eat healthy, I take iron tablets daily plus other vitamins and supplements. I am a healthy weight. I feel this affects my career and my social life. I am a professional model and no matter how great the work opportunity is I just don’t have the energy to do it. I feel like I’ve missed so many opportunities because I feel like this. I have my own business as well as modelling and at times I have not felt able to work for a week or two at a time and have lost contracts. Someone please help!

Hi. I’ve felt tired for over 3 years now and i am 14. exercise around 60 mins a day and have no health probs. It is really bugging me and it goes worse every so often. i have been to the doctor and had my blood tested. There is nothing wrong with me but some people think its because I’m really tall and its something to do with that. I’ve tried everything that people suggested and it has not made a difference. I’m concerned about this but it has not put me off any daily routine or anything. I’m quite worried.

I am 22 years old with a generally good diet, I take B complex with C vitamins everyday. I work at least 8 hours Monday thru Friday, I walk a lot during the day and get at least 7 hours of sleep a night. My job isn’t too stressful and I have an active social life. I had a bad case of mono for 10 weeks starting in mid March of this year and have not gotten out of this rut of chronic fatigue. No matter what I do, drink, eat, etc. I just cannot fully wake up. Red Bull, coffee, espresso, other energy drinks don’t help. I drink a ton of water everyday. My shoulders and neck are constantly tense for no reason. I literally fall asleep anywhere… on the bus, at work, sitting at my desk, anything. I’ve dosed off a few times today at work already and I had a solid 7.5 hours of sleep last night and a strong cup of coffee this morning. WHAT’S WRONG WITH ME!!?? please help! I need to wake up!

Hi – I left a comment up further on the page as a reply because I saw a few people who seemed to have this “tiredness” connected with having had mono at some point.
However – if I really think about it, i’ve been “tired” all my life. I remember going to relatives’ on weekends for gatherings and what-not, and always finding a bed to “take a nap in”, as far back in childhood as I can remember… I’d be 8 and TIRED on a Saturday afternoon, while my cousins and siblings were playing…

Here is a thought… let’s see if any of us have commonalities in when we DID feel energetic, or “normal”? For me, in my late 20′s – I spent about 3-4 years working steadily on night shift in a good combination of deskwork + physical movement job. I did some administrative work as well as errand-running (getting tools, making copies, walking the floor collecting papers, information-gathering, etc etc) for a production plant. I worked 12hr shifts, starting 9pm, ending 9am…. and I felt… perfectly normal. Slept way better during the day, had way more energy at night, took NO getting used to the hours. I would have to say that was the happiest, and healthiest I ever felt in my life. I slept great, ate great, had energy, and never complained about fatigue or depression (except on any off-days where I HAD to function in normal society)

Has anyone but me ever wondered if there is MORE to the concept of “night person”/”morning-person”? If a *normal FUNCTIONING person was forced to live opposite to the accepted daytime-wake, and nighttime-sleep cycle – would they now become one of us *abnormal FATIGUED people?

Has anyone thought it could be M.E/CFS?! I know it won’t be that in many of the cases but I do think it’s worth thinking about, esp if you have been tired etc for a substantial amount of time, and a change of diet etc hasn’t worked.

Any help? Email me (—) would be greatly appreciated, I am always tired and can never concentrate on school (I’m in grade 9 Advanced)

I have been going through the same feeling of tiredness. Mine seems to have started four years ago, but has always popped up here and there throughout my life. Since I started college (at 34), I’ve had to force myself to sit and concentrate; never an easy task for someone with ADHD. My legs start to shake, my mind wanders, and next thing you know, I’m stressed out and tired all of the time. I took time off this last summer to concentrate on work which required me moving around, bending, squatting, and sweating. It seemed to have helped during the day, but only because I was not able to concentrate on how tired I felt. As I get older I am unable to move as fast as I used to and find myself sitting more than standing. I feel as though I am destined to a sedentary lifestyle with constant anxiety and depression. Is it the information age causing me to remain glued to a computer screen in order to accomplish any type of productive activity, or is it just a byproduct of getting older?
I have a recollection that may be responsible. Most parents teach their kids to walk and talk during the first year of their life, but seem to spend the rest of their lives teaching them to sit down and shut up. Maybe we are getting to much sleep at an early age. I remember going to bed at 8:30 and getting up at 7:00 as a child. That’s almost twelve hours. Maybe it’s engrained now and I can’t shake it.
